SCHOLARSHIP

SCHOLARSHIP - A PIECE OF ALPHA PHI

Hello! My name is Kaitlyn and I’m the Director of Academic Development for Alpha Phi’s Gamma Omicron chapter. Scholarship is something we value and dedicate ourselves to by working hard alongside our sisters. So what does scholarship look like to us? Below are some of the ways we work together to pursue our goals and ambitions here at Drake University.

Starting in the fall, our Scholarship Committee is composed of 6-7 members that represent each college at Drake. Once midterm season hits, committee members meet with new members within the same area of study to check in and see how their semester is going. Committee members also provide additional academic resources such as tutoring or advising for new members as needed throughout the semester.

We also have an “Ivy League” program where members who receive a 3.0 GPA or above receive fun scholarship gifts each semester consisting of things like t-shirts, socks, water bottles, and more. Those who receive a 3.5 - 4.0 GPA receive additional gifts and get an invitation to our scholarship lunch in the fall to reward their hard work.

The A’s and B’s program occurs during Monday night dinner when everyone gets the chance to share a meal at our chapter house once a week. Members are encouraged to write down an A or B they received in a class for an assignment, project, or test and enter for the chance to win a $5 gift card to various locations. Only two are chosen each week—motivating members to keep working hard and to participate again the next week.

Two Academic sisterhood events are also held each semester. The first one is a registration sisterhood that is designed to help with the process of choosing classes for the upcoming semester. Members are encouraged to come to the house, eat snacks, and help one another when choosing the perfect class to fill a requirement or figure out what professor will be the best option their class. The second sisterhood is right before finals week—but it’s not necessarily just to study. Things such as face masks, coloring books, snacks, and more are provided so that members can take a study break and focus on taking care of themselves during this stressful season.

Within our chapter house, there is also a 24/7 Scholarship room that everyone is encouraged to use as a quiet study space. The room has resources including class notes from previous members held within our study files cabinet, and a major board that lists every members area of study.

As the Director of Academics, I’m committed to helping our members work together to pursue their academic ambitions and provide resources to help strengthen our commitment to our studies.
